Girls' basketball: Prescott takes second at Petitgoue Invite
Their 2018-19 season is still four months away, but the Prescott Cardinals are still finding time for basketball games in the meantime.
The Cardinals were invited to the Thursday, June 28, WBCA Jerry Petitgoue Invitational Tournament where they took second place after playing three games at the Wisconsin Dells' JustAgame Fieldhouse.
Prescott handled their quarterfinal game with ease by taking down Rice Lake by a 50-25 margin before facing a more challenging semifinal opponent: the Onalaska Hilltoppers.
The Hilltoppers led 25-22 at halftime of the semifinal game after concluding the first half with a 16-4 run, but the Cardinals remained in contention when Bella Lenz hit a three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation, sending the game to overtime. Lenz's three-point heroics were matched by Allie Murphy who hit a buzzer-beating three to outmatch the Hilltoppers 46-45.
However, the Cardinals were unable to restrain Platteville's energy in the championship game and lost 55-38 to the Hillmen who finished with a 20-5 record in the 2017-18 season.
The Cardinals, like their fans, have high hopes for the upcoming season and know that their out-of-season court time will help them get to where they want to be come February.
